City to administer donations

The North Cariboo Multi-Centre Fundraising Committee has been busy generating ideas on how to secure the funding needed for the project. The approach being taken is to accelerate the corporate and grass-roots fundraising efforts while continuing to lobby senior levels of government for funding. The committee believes this approach will build momentum, provide leverage when seeking large donations and grants, and raise the project profile in the community. Council has authorized City staff to collect and administer funds collected through these campaigns.

A few key points: Any donation made before the project is confirmed to proceed will not be refunded. All funds will go into the North Cariboo Recreation and Parks capital reserve. Large donations can be made by means of a signed pledge. Tax deductible receipts will be issued for donations of $100 or more. More information about the Multi-Centre fundraising committee's efforts andplans will be available in the New Year.

New election officer named

The City has a new Chief Electoral Officer to run the 2011 election. Maureen Murray, a former long-time City employee with extensive election experienceand knowledge, has been appointed to the post. Lori Scott, the former Chief Electoral Officer and Deputy Corporate Administrator has accepted a new position as Deputy Corporate Officer in Osoyoos.

Transit system running well

Council received a performance summary of the Quesnel Transit System for the 2010-11 operating year. Overall, the system is operating well, with a few key events pointed out by BC Transit, including: Cost per hour and cost per ride are lower than similar transit systems. Cost recovery is above average. Revenue increased by 1.5 per cent over last year. Ridership (based on actual ride counts) decreased by .5 per cent over last year. Actual total costs were seven per cent below budgeted costs. Quesnel Transit was used by 80,750 passengers in 2010-11. It is a partnership between the City of Quesnel and BC Transit. The Cariboo Regional District also provides funding towards the Quesnel Transit System. Five Five Transport is the operating company.

Other news

Councillors Peter Couldwell and Coralee Oakes were presented certificates of appreciation from the Province of British Columbia for their years of service to the community. The MLA for Cariboo-Chilcotin, Donna Barnett, presented the certificates in person.Two new members, Roland Traver and Len Sinclair, were appointed the Quesnel Community and Economic Development Corporation Board. The QCEDC is a wholly owned subsidiary of the City, with a mandate of facilitating business development, economic growth and community improvement.The City has a new Animal, Bird and Insect Control and Licensing Bylaw. A number of changes were made to the old bylaw to modernize it, including an increase to the ordinary, neutered dog licence fee from $5 to $10.
