PostHeaderIcon Suspicious fire damages more than $1 million in property

RCMPshield_crest2Investigation continues into the suspicious fire which caused more than one million dollars in property damage to logs and machinery near Nazko First Nations Reserve last Tuesday night.

Shortly after 10pm on Tuesday, May 8th, 2012, Quesnel RCMP were called to the scene of a fire burning on Baezaeko Road near Nazko.  Upon arrival, RCMP observed a large log dump pile (containing approximately 4000 cubic meters of wood)  fully engulfed in flames.  The fire is estimated to have caused well over one million dollars in property damage to logs and equipment and has been deemed suspicious.

PostHeaderIcon Quesnel mounties catch bank robber

RCMPshield_crest2A 41 year old male is in police custody following a bank robbery in Quesnel. Shortly before 5:00pm on Friday, May 11, 2012, Quesnel RCMP received a report of a bank robbery.  Staff at the Scotiabank called 911 after a lone male entered the bank, demanded money and quickly fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.  Members of the Quesnel RCMP were in the area and apprehended the suspect within minutes -  less than one block away.  The 41 year old male was arrested for robbery and will remain in police custody awaiting a bail hearing on Saturday.

city_of_quesnelQuesnel City Council has passed a motion of censure regarding improper disclosure by Councilor Sushil Thapar. A motion of censure is a formal statement that Council is reprimanding one of its members for conduct they feel has violated the Charter.

Council passed the motion based on Councilor Thapar’s release of confidential information discussed during duly called and closed-to-the-public meetings.

PostHeaderIcon Grow op suspects found hiding in the walls

050612_grow-op_bustOn May 1, the North District Integrated Marijuana Enforcement Task Force (NDIME) members of the Quesnel RCMP, Williams Lake RCMP and Prince George Police Dog Services executed a search warrant at a rural residence on Rainbow Road of Quesnel B.C.

RCMP entered the residence and located a large marihuana grow operation. The residence did not have any furniture and the entire building was being used solely for the purpose of producing marijuana.

PostHeaderIcon Quesnel RCMP encourage parents to talk to kids about stranger safety

050312_child_safetyOn Tuesday, May 1, Quesnel RCMP received a report of a suspicious occurrence.  Staff at Kersley Elementary contacted RCMP after a student reported that he had been approached by a stranger who invited him into his vehicle.

The boy was riding his bike to Kersley Elementary early Tuesday morning, when he says that he was approached by a male driving a newer model black pickup truck with black rims. The male driver spoke to the boy and told the child to get into the vehicle. The child fled on his bike and then reported the incident to the school.

The male is described as a younger male with tanned skin and flat brown hair. Anyone with any information regarding this incident is asked to call the Quesnel RCMP immediately - 250-992-9211.

PostHeaderIcon City Council to seek new City Manager

city_of_quesnelQuesnel City Council has announced that it has accepted the resignation of City Manager John Stecyk, effective immediately. Stecyk, who is resigning for personal reasons, came to the City in January 2011.The City of Quesnel wishes Mr. Stecyk well in his future endeavours. The City will now begin the process of recruiting a new City Manager, which is expected to take several months to complete. The City will provide updates to the community when appropriate.

PostHeaderIcon Drilling in West Quesnel Land Stability area underway

city_of_quesnelVertical well drilling, an integral component of the West Quesnel Land Stability dewatering program, is underway. JR Drilling Central Ltd began work this morning in the Paley Place area of Uplands. The drilling crews are expecting to spend from two to three days at each of the 14 drill sites. The entire process is expected to take from four to six weeks to complete, depending on the drilling conditions encountered. Drilling will take place at a number of different sites, including along Dixon Street, near Stork and Crane Avenues, and in a wooded area to the west of Abbott Drive near Dawson Street. PostHeaderIcon Empty kayak found floating in the Fraser near Quesnel

RCMPshield_crest2Shortly after 9:30am on Friday, April 20, 2012, Quesnel RCMP were called by a concerned citizen after they had seen an unoccupied kayak floating down the Fraser River around the foot bridge.

Quesnel Search and Rescue was activated and a river boat was launched. The empty kayak was located and retrieved from the river. At this time police do not suspect anyone was in the kayak.

PostHeaderIcon $4 million for new recreation centre in Quesnel

quesnelThe Province is providing $4 million for a new recreation and cultural centre in Quesnel that will create jobs and support healthy family activities.

The North Cariboo Multi-Centre project includes a 1,600-seat arena, 450-seat theatre, and accompanying event and assembly space. While each component has a specific use, they can also be combined with one another to ensure flexibility in hosting larger events such as conferences and trade shows. The arena and theatre also encourage participation in physical activity and healthy lifestyles in the North Cariboo.

"The Cariboo Regional District believes in investing in communities and supporting the athletic and artistic elements of the Cariboo," said Cariboo Regional District Board Chair Al Richmond. It helps us improve the amenities our current residents enjoy while helping us attract new business ventures and residents."

PostHeaderIcon Investigation continues into the death of a 15 year old Quesnel teen

RCMPshield_crest2Shortly after 2:00pm on Friday, April 6th, 2012, Quesnel RCMP were called to a residence in the 400 block of Baker Drive after a teenage male was discovered unresponsive inside the residence.   The 15 year old male was pronounced dead on scene.   Preliminary investigation conducted by Quesnel RCMP’s G.I.S. investigators and the Coroner suggests that drugs may have been a factor in this death.  Foul play is not suspected. An autopsy will be conducted later next week to confirm the cause of death.  

The name of the deceased will not be released at this time, in order to allow the grieving family to make notifications to all relatives. 

Quesnel RCMP are working with the community to ensure that Victim Services are available to anyone in need of grief counselling support. Investigation into this death continues.  Anyone with any information regarding this investigation is asked to call the Quesnel RCMP at 250-992-9211.
