Accident near Quesnel claims lives of two Smithers residents

Shortly after 10:00am on Thursday, December 29th, 2011, RCMP were called to the scene of a fatal motor vehicle collision on Highway 97 near Ahbau (ah-boo) Creek between Hixon and Quesnel, British Columbia.
The crash occurred when a commercial transport truck with two trailer units travelling northbound lost control striking a southbound sport utility vehicle killing its two occupants instantly. A 61 year old female and a 64 year old female, both of Smithers, died as a result of the crash. The names of both women are being withheld at the request of their families.
The driver of the transport truck was transported to Quesnel’s G.R. Baker Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and later released. The truck and trailer unit have been towed and will undergo a mechanical inspection by investigators.
Highway #97 was closed for more than four hours (re-opening to single lane traffic at approximately 2:30pm) while investigators from North Cariboo Regional Traffic Services, North District’s Integrated Collision Analyst and Reconstructionist Services, Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement, the Ministry of Transportation and the Quesnel RCMP examined the scene and investigated the cause of the collision.
Road conditions at the time of the crash were described as poor and icy. Alcohol was NOT believed to be a factor in this collision.
The investigation continues.
