Have you ever wanted to manage your own forest? Here’s your chance with a new woodlot licence available near Quesnel, Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Minister Steve Thomson announced today.

The woodlot includes 1,175 hectares of Crown land approximately 35 kilometres south of Quesnel and has a proposed allowable annual cut of 1,479 cubic metres. Most of the woodlot is a mix of fir and aspen.

Applications will be accepted until Thursday, March 22, 2012 at 10:30am. Further details about the new licence are available from the Thompson Okanagan Region office in Kamloops or at: https://www23.for.gov.bc.ca/notices/init.do

Expanding the woodlot program to provide smaller operators with new tenure opportunities is one example of how this government is enabling job creation as part of ‘Canada Starts Here: The BC Jobs Plan’.

“Woodlot licences are one way the Province continues to support new or expanded forestry opportunities for smaller operators, providing jobs for B.C. families.” says Steve Thomson, Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations.

“This is the fourth woodlot licence made available in the Quesnel timber supply area since 2010. These small-tenure opportunities allow British Columbians the chance to manage forest land directly.” says Brian McNaughton, general manager, Federation of BC Woodlot Associations.

Quick Facts:

  • There are about 860 active woodlots in British Columbia.
  • Woodlots are replaceable tenures, usually awarded for an initial term of 20 years.
  • Each woodlot generates jobs in planning, harvesting, road construction and maintenance, reforestation, silviculture and small-scale timber processing.
  • Woodlot licences are small, area-based tenures that combine private land with up to 800 hectares of Crown land on the Coast and 1,200 hectares of Crown land in the Interior.
